Age: 29 (headcanon age, no canon given)

Background Information: Wiki! Please note that McGillis' backstory deals with CSA and child prostitution so proceed with caution. (This is not expected to come up a whole lot within the game as he generally doesn't talk about it. An opt-out will be provided.)

Personality:
“Authority, vigor, might, capability, vitality, influence and brute force. A being that holds all those powers together. The leader of Gjallarhorn, Agnika Kaieru.“

In canon McGillis is described, rather uncharitably but accurately, as 'a child who never grew up'. Though he appears as a very competent military man on the surface, he is somebody who has dedicated his whole life to chasing his childhood hero.

Growing up in extreme poverty under the constant threat of violence turned McGillis into a jaded person who believes in nothing but brute force to keep himself alive. He was determined to use violent means to climb the social ladder and eventually lead a better life – only to despair as he realized that even as adopted heir to one of the most powerful men in the world, he is still subjected to violent abuse day in and out. It is then when McGillis discovered the narrative that would shape his whole life and personality from there on: Agnika Kaieru, the founder of the organization he belongs to, and the hero of a war 300 years in the past. The tale of such brilliant strength and glory ushering in a better era inspired McGillis and saved his soul – he would from then on dedicate himself to following in the footsteps of his hero, never losing sight of that goal again.

As such, McGillis is a man who has an inherent interest in addressing social ills. He believes that the social structure of his world which relies on nepotism and backroom deals is inherently corrupt and needs to be completely overhauled. His ideal world is one in which everything is decided on merit – the circumstances of one's birth are relevant and every accomplishment is based on one's own strength. Important to note here is that while this sounds good in theory, McGillis still very much thinks power trumps everything. His perfect world does not truly account for those who are not capable of or do not care to amass power.

And while McGillis' goals are somewhat noble, he is very far from being a good person. Raised by his scheming and power-hungry adoptive father, McGillis himself is a schemer and manipulator through and through. He is not above using dirty tricks and sacrificing people dear to him – he even orchestrates the death in battle of one of his childhood friends while personally killing the other.

Yet there is a hidden sentimental element to those specific sacrifices – McGillis derives all his drive from being a person filled with anger so he believes that he can never allow himself to be content or else he'll lose motivation and thus his reason for being. In truth, he cares about his friends and was merely trying his hardest to ignore how happy they made him. Getting rid of them was to steel his own resolve above all else.

There is a fatal flaw to McGillis' machinations however and that is his belief in signs and omens, in stories and legends. Having grown up rereading the tale of Agnika Kaieru over and over and internalizing it as the very core of his personality, McGillis inherently thinks that life will rhyme, that its narrative will be poetic. He chooses his allies based on aesthetics (underdogs like he was, unearthed a robot that featured in the history of Agnika Kaieru by coincidence) and bases his plans around the idea that the world leaders will all respect tradition and legend. His whole revolution basically hinges on the equivalent of pulling the sword out of the stone and hoping that everyone will indeed decide that means he is the rightful king. (They do not.)

McGillis has the makings of a man who could be brilliant but his childhood trauma is firmly holding the reins on every decision he ever makes. Inside of him there is a sullen child who firmly refuses to be touched and McGillis is protecting that child with all he has.

You'd never be able to tell just by meeting him though. To the outside McGillis presents as an incredibly charming and competent leader. He is diligent to the point of being a workaholic. Though his low class background assures that rumors follow him around, he holds his head high and is highly respected by the people actually around him.

Abilities & Inventory: McGillis doesn't have any supernatural abilities. He is a trained military commander and pilot, and has the abilities associated with those trades.

He will be arriving in the pilot suit he died in. He'll have a gun on him. That's pretty much it, really.

Suitability & Plans: Though McGillis presents as a tough and pragmatic military man in his daily life, the basis of his thinking is and has always been fairytales and legends. McGillis wants to live in the world where everything falls in line to join the hero in his happy ending. Being somebody who is so defined by the narrative structure of fairytales as well as somebody who very much just likes to read, I feel McGillis is a fun pick for Songerein's game theme.

I'll be taking him from after his death when all his plans have failed, so he won't have any dramatic drive to return home. McGillis is going to be interested in learning all about how the world of Songerein works and how the world here could maybe be structured into an ideal society that he failed to bring about at home. He is a naturally curious character, so engaging with people from other universes is going to be inherently intriguing to him also and drive him to seek out others.

I don't dare to say my plan is for McGillis to become happy because ultimately he is just deeply wrapped up in himself and his trauma, but I want him to learn some more emotional intellegence and at least get closer to it.
